Berlin-based musician, videographer and visual artist Planningtorock has always stood out on the strength of her inventiveness and vision, making music that sonically and emotionally runs a gamut that might daunt other artists. Her fearless expressiveness is apparent on “Doorway,” the first single from her DFA debut album W, where it manifests itself via darkly emotive pizzicato violins and haunted vocals. The remix from Brooklyn’s Creep – DJs/Producers Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard – is, at its core, in possession of a similarly moody feel, but with less concrete underpinnings; while the original is heavy in its intensity, the re-crafted version is more dusky, diffuse and narcotic. Truly and Bagel, a duo comprising Mount Sims and Rostron herself, succeed at turning the song on its head, converting the somber track into a disco driven whirl of glinting keyboards. Rounding out this digital-only EP is a remix from Hermione Frank’s solo project rRoxymore. The sound artist and composer offers a take that feels jet propelled: It begins with synths preparing for takeoff and settles charmingly into a midtempo groove of handclaps, crystal bells, and bleeps.
