After a flurry of winter releases, Benoit & Sergio return to DFA with the "Principles" EP--Beach Boys techno for summer nights. Following in the footsteps of their "Boy Trouble" and "Where The Freaks Have No Name" EPs, Benoit & Sergio's "Principles" continues to explore underground pop sensibilities in the context of the big-room dance floor. "Principles," originally featured on Soul Clap's Social Experiment 002 mix, has already emerged as a standout on an album full of worthy contenders. The opening minute of the track recalls the beckoning stomp of a Meadowlands rock concert, as the vocals swell toward a rubber band bass line and kick at the climax. The song only pulls back on the chorus – a wide-open stack of Sergio's vocals – that slowly, hazily fade into the commotion that (re)ensues. Flipside "Everybody" is a summer wave pounding summer surf. Marimbas, arpeggiated pianos and organs wash over the massive undertow of the bass line. As the vocal harmonies of the track's simple refrain--"Everybody needs somebody to pretend"--climb, we are at once in the realm of 60s California euphoria, of Ibiza's excess, or of a rooftop dalliance.
