Guitarist and producer Barry Lynn (aka Boxcutter) became the talk of the dubstep scene in 2005 with the release of his astounding Brood / Sunshine single on London’s taste-making dance label, Hot Flush. On his second release, Tauhid, Lynn continues to revolutionize the garage and breaks sound with a fresh mix of fractured breaks, Eastern inflections and a deep dub sensibility. The title track is a micro-symphony of writhing bass, FX-laden guitars and blurry half-step rhythms that quickly devolve into pure breakbeat abstraction. Other tracks, like “Silver Birch Solstice,” harken back to the two-step garage craze of a few years ago. With heavy rotation from influential DJs like Ras Kwame, One World and Breezeblock, Boxcutter comes into 2006 as one of the hottest dance artists around.
